Antarctica as a global icon in environmental conservation
This bilingual information dossier on the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Madrid Protocol was presented on the 4th of October at the National Archaeological Museum in a high-level event that was inaugurated by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and, virtually, by the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, and the Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison.
The polar regions have become a symbol of the fight against climate change. This dossier urges the international community to undertake new initiatives to conserve biodiversity and to curb the impact of human activity in sensitive areas of the Southern Ocean. It also underlines the need to pay special attention to the conservation of wildlife, marine biodiversity, well-functioning Antarctic ecosystems and the future development of the Antarctic Protected Areas System.
